Reuben

Apprenticeship completed: 2020
“During my apprenticeship at Jacq and Wills Landscapes, I gained strong horticultural knowledge through a mix of practical, on-site learning and theory at Writtle. Working closely with Will, a keen plantsman, gave me a solid foundation in horticultural tasks and plant identification, alongside extensive landscaping experience on-site. I worked on a wide range of unique projects and developed hands-on skills such as laying patios and building pergolas. By the end of the apprenticeship, I had experience across the full process, from design through to build and maintenance.
“My apprenticeship was both hands-on and highly supportive. I learned directly from experienced colleagues on-site and was encouraged to be curious and explore areas that interested me. If I showed enthusiasm for something, I was often given the opportunity to attend additional courses, which really helped me build confidence and develop my skills. I chose Jacq and Wills because of their reputation for high-quality work, the diversity of projects, and the chance to learn from skilled landscapers.
“Since completing my apprenticeship, I’ve progressed through several roles within the business and now manage the maintenance and specialist works team. I’m keen to continue developing this area, while exploring new techniques, products, and innovations within the industry.”

“Working at Jacq and Wills Landscapes during my apprenticeship was a genuine pleasure. I was given the opportunity to test my knowledge, develop my skills, and hone my craft in a supportive environment. Everyone around me was patient and encouraging, which made a huge difference to my confidence and development.
“I chose an apprenticeship mainly because of my age and circumstances. Starting at 19, I needed to earn while working towards my future, particularly as I was saving for a house. An apprenticeship gave me the chance to build a career without stepping away from paid work.
“Before joining Jacq and Wills, I worked in general building, covering a wide range of construction work. During the summer months, we took on landscaping projects, which is where I really fell in love with the trade. When I came across Jacq and Wills, I knew it felt right. After researching the company, it was clear from their work and social media that they nurtured young talent and took pride in their team.”
Tom
Current role: Landscape Assistant
Apprenticeship completed: June 2025
“During my apprenticeship, I gained a broad range of practical and technical skills that now form the foundation of my role at JWL. This included brickwork, plant identification, planting knowledge, environmental controls, site layout planning, and developing a deeper understanding of natural elements. Alongside this, I also built strong technical and team-working skills through hands-on experience on-site.
“One of the standout aspects of my apprenticeship was the level of support I received throughout. The team were really encouraging, and I learned a lot on the job. Most of my learning took place in real working environments, which suited me perfectly. I also appreciated the balance of attending college just one day a week rather than being in full-time education.
“I was already interested in the industry and had previous experience and connections with Jacq and Wills Landscapes, which made the opportunity even more appealing. Working outdoors with a great team has been hugely positive for both my physical and mental wellbeing. The apprenticeship gave me a really strong foundation to build on, providing all the core knowledge and skills needed for the role and supporting my progression within the business.
“Looking ahead, I’d like to specialise in aquatics and pond work, and I’m also keen to complete a management course in the future. My aim is to continue developing my skills and, eventually, take on a leadership role within the business.”
