The Courtyard Garden
Trumpington, Cambridge 2025
£20,000 – £30,000
Design, Build Project
Completed in 2025, The Courtyard Garden in Trumpington is a wonderful example of how a small, overlooked space can be transformed into a calm and beautifully resolved retreat. What began as a shaded corner where grass refused to grow has become a garden full of quiet charm – a space the client can now enjoy throughout the year.
One of the key challenges was working with the existing layout. Much of the original paving was already in place, so the new section of the garden had to be designed with sensitivity, ensuring the materials and flow blended seamlessly with what was there before. The result is a pace that feels cohesive and intentional, with no visible divide between old and new.
At the heart of the design sits a weathered mild‑steel planter, which holds the garden’s focal point: a graceful Amelanchier lamarckii, chosen for its delicate blossom, dappled summer canopy and glowing autumn colour. Positioned centrally, it anchors the courtyard and brings a sense of quiet drama to the space. To enhance privacy and soften the boundaries, we installed sleek trellis work over the client’s existing fence, upgrading its appearance and increasing the height without overwhelming the garden.
Shade‑tolerant planting brings texture and gentle movement, thriving even in the lower light levels and helping the space feel lush despite its sheltered position. Discreet garden lighting completes the transformation, allowing the courtyard to be enjoyed all year round and well into the evenings, where the Amelanchier and steel planter take on an atmospheric glow.
From the client
“From start to finish Will, Sasha and their team have been fantastic. Will listened to what we wanted and was prepared to work around what we had already, bringing great ideas and sticking to budget. I can’t praise Nathan and Louis enough for the care and attention they put in to the work. The quality of the landscaping is first class and we are absolutely thrilled with the result.”
